Art, landscape and new ways of thinking about our future.

CARBON is a major Creative Sunraysia initiative exploring the relationship between culture, landscape, climate and community in the Mallee and Murray–Darling region.

At its heart is a simple question: what role can creativity play in how we understand, respond to and imagine environmental change?

Bringing together artists, thinkers, researchers, First Nations knowledge, communities and people working with the land, CARBON creates opportunities for new conversations and collaborations grounded in the distinctive environment of our region.

Through creative projects, public conversations, research, commissions and partnerships, CARBON will explore the forces shaping our landscape — from water, agriculture and climate to ecology, culture and our relationship with Country.

Rather than approaching these questions from a single discipline, CARBON creates a meeting place for art, science, knowledge and lived experience.

Developed by Creative Sunraysia with an initial discussion paper led by Professor Paul Carter, CARBON is conceived as a long-term platform for ambitious creative thinking rooted here in Sunraysia, but connected to conversations taking place across Australia and beyond.
